The Apollo Portunus Toastmasters Club is located in
Gander. The club received its charter in February 1981. The
club was organized by John Reid. John and Bob Symonds, who had
been involved in the chartering of the second
Terra Nova Toastmasters club had transferred to Gander with Terra
Nova Telecommunications. Bob was a charter
member of the club. John became the club's first President. Other
charter executive included; VP Education: Doug
Cudmore, VP Administration: Ed Pike, Secretary: Bonnie Pritchett,
Treasurer: John Hopkins, Sergeant at Arms:
Diane O'Brien. The club's name was suggested by charter member
Audrey Ford and is derived from the following;
Apollo - Greek God of Communication and Portunus - Latin God of
Language and Arts. The club was officially
presented with its charter by Gander-Twillingate MP. George
Baker.
The club has produced one ATM, John Reid. John received his ATM
certificate in the spring of 1990.
