Schooner Toastmasters Club (2631-U) Marystown
Return to Menu ........................................ More Information About The Club In the winter of 1999, the Burin Peninsula Women’s Network group undertook activities in the ‘Equity Sector’ of the Burin Peninsula Schooner Board Strategic Economic Plan. This group felt that better communication skills would enhance prospects in finding employment, in the economic development process and in organizing community groups. One avenue of improving communication skills and confidence building was through Toastmasters. In March 1999, Donna Power and Kay Riggs attended a MUN meeting with Tammy Joyce, a member of MUN Toastmasters. The two women from Schooner Board then worked with Patrick Dunne of Cabot Toastmasters Club to draft an advertisement providing general information about Toastmasters to prospective Burin Peninsula members, men and women. On Saturday, April 17, 1999 Pat Dunne, with the assistance of others from the sponsoring MUN Club, chaired a briefing session at the College of the North Atlantic in Burin. The first regular meeting of the Burin Peninsula (subsequently called Schooner) Toastmasters was held in the College of the North Atlantic on May 1, 1999. Evelyn Richardson was the first Schooner Toastmaster to give a speech. Since that time Marlene Hamshaw, a member of Schooner TM who transferred from Halifax TM, has become Schooner’s first Competent Toastmaster. Schooner Toastmasters Club has continued to grow throughout the year 2000. That year it reached twenty paid members. In the spring/early summer of 2001 its Charter will be presented and the club plans to hold a special meeting to celebrate the occasion.
