![]() Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Welcome! We have had free web counter visitors since 1 Jan 2007 Toastmasters is the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to developing effective communication and leadership skills. The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, in Santa Ana, California. Today there are more than 8,000 Toastmasters clubs, world wide, with more than 170,000 members. Toastmasters has a long history in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Hundreds of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have benefited from the unique Toastmasters experience. The first clubs in the province were established, almost forty years ago, by the U.S. military at their bases in Argentia and Goose Bay. A club was also started at Pepperell Air Force Base, before that station was phased out. In 1960 clubs also existed at the Argentia Naval Station, Ernest Harmon Air Force Base and at the US military base in Goose Bay. The first civilian club, Terra Nova Toastmasters U-3192, was formed in 1960. The Terra Nova club remained active for several years until it folded in the early seventies. A new Terra Nova Toastmasters (3995-U) was formed in 1979. Several other clubs were formed in both Newfoundland and Labrador. The oldest, active, club in the province is The Toastmasters Club of Grand Falls - Windsor, who received their charter in September, 1966. There are currently nine active clubs in the province, with a total of almost 200 members. |
